PROCEDURES AND POLICIES
LUNCH
Lunch is a very important and sometimes a little confusing for second
graders. This year the choices for lunch are hot lunch, fresh-made salads, deli sandwiches, and an alternate which is the manager’s choice. Lunch costs $2.80. Milk is included with all hot lunches and can also be purchased to go along with cold lunch. The cost of milk is $0.50. RSD6 participates in the National School Breakfast Program. This program is offered on a monthly basis to all students. To pre-pay for breakfasts and lunches, please go to www.mypaymentsplus.com. To obtain your students ID# call the cafeteria manager at 860-491- 6024. If paying with cash or check please send the money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and grade so I can send it down to the lunchroom in the morning. If you have any other questions about school lunches please call the cafeteria manager at the above number.
SNACKS
The cafeteria does serve snacks and ice cream at the end of the lunch period. The snacks cost $.75 and $1.00. Children can use their MyPaymentsPlus plan to buy them if you give them permission or they can bring in money. The students will be responsible for this money so perhaps sending it in a change purse, a secure pocket, or a labeled envelope would be best. Please help us enforce the rule that children should not use their money to buy something for another child. Sometimes parents have a reason for not letting their child buy a snack.
CLASSROOM SNACK
Every day we take a quick break for a healthy snack. Please send in only 1 snack. Your child can drink water to go with his/her snack or bring in a container of juice. This year the children are independently eating their snack during our read aloud, so it is VERY important that the snack you are sending in is extremely easy and not too messy to eat. Please peel and cut any fruits and veggies and send in a spoon if needed. Since we are trying to focus on healthy snacks please try to avoid foods with a high sugar, salt or fat content. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
BIRTHDAYS
We love to celebrate these special days! Please feel free to send in a special snack if you wish. Please just let me know if you are planning to send in a special treat. We do have a child with an allergy to pistachio nuts and cashews in our class, so I need to get the nurse's OK before serving any birthday treats. You can drop off the snacks in the office in the morning before school or just send them in with your child. Also, invitations to birthday parties can only be sent through school if you are inviting all the children, or all the boys, or all the girls. If you want to send out invitations, please have your child give them to me to pass out so I can do so at a time that will not disrupt instruction.
TRANSPORTATION
I will send your child home using whatever his/her normal transportation is each day unless you send me a note stating otherwise. So, if there is a change of any kind please send in a note with your child in the morning. If you should have an occasional change that happens during the day you can call or email Mrs. Wiig at school. You can email me as well, but I check my email very early in the morning and then again after the students leave. However, it is MUCH easier for us to have your child’s dismissal plan first thing in the morning.
SHARE
We do share as part of morning meeting each week. I have divided the class up into fifths so each child has a particular day to share. Please remember that a share doesn’t always have to be something brought in. Your child can tell about something exciting in their life. Please try NOT to have your child bring in a toy each week. I understand that toys are important to them, but I also know that they have other interesting things that they could share. It would be great if you could talk to your child the night before to help plan out what he/she will share the next day. Here is the schedule for share:
Monday: Allison and Meghan
Tuesday: Nathaniel and Tyler
Wednesday: Gabe, Logan, and Jameson
Thursday: Sophia, Eliza, and Ava
Friday: Shayla, Francesca, and Abigail

BACKPACKS
PLEASE check your child’s backpack EACH night to see that they stay uncluttered. There should be room in there for their lunchbox, snack, reading bags, homework folder, library books, and the Communication Folder. Please discourage your child from bringing in lots of other things that are not necessary at school. Remember it is not healthy for them to be carrying around a heavy backpack. If they want to bring in a toy to play with at recess, please limit it to one, small toy and have them think about the possibility of the toy getting lost or broken. Also, please check your child’s backpack daily because although I try to send home all notes or messages from school in their Take-home folders on Fridays there are days when I need to send something home before these folders go home.
BATHROOMS AND WATER
Since we do not have bathrooms or a working water fountain in our classroom, my system is that when your child needs to go to the bathroom, he/she takes the pass and does so. I do expect that your child will not abuse the system and will behave responsibly while out of the classroom. Also, since we do not have a water fountain in our classroom, it is a BIG help if your child has a clean, sports top water bottle filled only with plain water each day. I like the sports top bottles because they do not spill.
RECESS
We do have recess daily. Please be sure to dress your child for the predicted conditions. We only stay indoors if it is raining or if it is extremely cold. During the winter the first graders can participate in sledding. Speaking of winter, you might want to consider having your child keep a pair of snow pants at school instead of lugging them back and forth. The boots, hats, and mittens aren't as much as a problem as they can be worn home daily. At the beginning of the winter season, please write me a note stating if your child's snow pants can stay at school.
BOOK ORDERS
I will be sending home book orders periodically throughout the year because I use the points earned from these companies to get new books for our classroom. I will also send a book order home in November in an envelope in case you want to buy books in secret for holiday gifts. Please don't ever feel obligated to buy.
